Gramercy, centered around the park of the same name, is an oasis of calm in what is otherwise a busy area of Manhattan. Meticulously planned and designed in a unified architectural style similar to that of many prestigious London neighborhoods, it is often described as the most beautiful part of Manhattan, if not of all New York City.
While Gramercy Park marks the southern end of Lexington Avenue at 21st Street, there are no accepted boundaries for the neighborhood as a whole. However, the area encompassed by the Gramercy Park Historic District provides a good outline, with a rouge outline delineated by Park Avenue South, 21st Street, Third Avenue, and 18th Street.
Built on what used to be a swamp, Gramercy is the creation of Samuel Ruggles, a 19th-century New York lawyer who not only planned its central park but also the buildings surrounding it. Residents throughout the neighborhood’s history have defeated projects that may disturb the area’s exclusive nature. In doing so, Gramercy is now an established and exclusive neighborhood home to a number of important figures and celebrities.
Mostly residential, most of the area’s population head over to Union Square, Greenwich Village, and the Flatiron District for shopping, dining, and entertainment. Gramercy is a neighborhood for those who seek serenity in an otherwise bustling Manhattan cityscape.
With a unique British feeling not found anywhere else in New York City, it will remain fashionable and exclusive for years to come. Convenient yet still separate, Gramercy is ideal for families or buyers looking for the feel of Old New York and architectural elegance in a contemporary and forward-thinking city.
